The perils of desk work

You never really think that working behind a desk everyday is particularly hazardous. Fire-fighters, policemen, and stuntmen, those are professions that we associate readily with danger. Travel Agents, accountants and marketers aren’t typically careers where there’s a high amount of danger. This is where the problems come in because we’re taking damage without even realising it. Our eyes are taking strain as we spend hour after hours staring at a Visual Display Unit (VDU), doing your work.

Part of this strain can be caused by poor eyesight, and this can become a vicious cycle. As your vision deteriorates, so you strain your eyes more trying to focus on the screen in front of you. Often it happens so gradually that you aren’t even aware that it’s happening.  By the time you realise that it’s happened, your eyes can already have undergone severe amounts of strain.  If you go for regular eye tests your optician can spot potential problems before they happen. Going for an eye test can also help in less direct manners, as those people whose eyesight deteriorates are more inclined to be involved in incidents that could injure them.

Some people may not be able to afford an eye test and so you might need an employer that cares for their employees by using an eyecare voucher scheme.  Having the eyecare voucher scheme allows employers to provide those employees who work with a VDU on a constant basis, with vouchers which allow them to have a free eye test. This removes the financial objections to going to have an eye test. It means that the employees who are vulnerable to eyestrain are taken care of and will remain productive members of staff.

The eyecare vouchers can be redeemed at your optician and get you a free eye test. Once you’ve gone for your eye test and the optician has your prescription, you can get a new pair of Glasses or contact lenses. This can then help to halt any deteriorating sight and increase your awareness of the eye health issues associated with desk work. A well organised corporate eyecare voucher scheme by your employers will help you to go for regular eye tests and ensure that your eyes can cope with your work well.

It’s not as dangerous as running into a burning building, but straining your eyes can affect you in other ways so it’s a danger people should always pay attention to.
