Triathlon Sunglasses

Key factors in choosing the right cycling/triathlon Sunglasses
Maybe you just started cycling, or doing triathlon. Maybe you have been doing it for a while now. What you have noticed however, is that everyone seems to be wearing the same style of sunglasses. So what’s all the fuss about? This article is going to take a closer look at the reasons why you should be wearing sunglasses specifically designed for triathlon/cycling as well as what you should be looking out for when purchasing Triathlon/cycling specific Sunglasses.
So why wear sunglasses when cycling or doing triathlon? There are obvious and not so obvious reasons, lets have a closer look.
• The first and seemingly most obvious reason for needing sunglasses is that they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Many people don’t realise how damaging the suns rays can be on your eyes and this is particularly prevalent with endurance sports athletes who spend many hour outdoors training and racing.
• Try going down a hill at 30mph and speeding straight through a swarm of insects. Aside from going into your mouth they also have a tendency to go into your eyes. The sunglasses form an important barrier to protect foreign object from going into your eyes and causing a crash or worse. They also prevent wind from causing watery eyes which can hamper your vision.
• The last reason you really want to ensure that you have adequate eye wear is that they reduce glare. Often cyclists/triathletes will train at dawn or dusk, the time of day where the sun’s glare can be at its worst. You also tend to spend allot of time on the road with regular traffic and this can be recipe for disaster. Reducing glare ensure that you are not blinded and put into a dangerous position because of lack of vision.
So when looking to buy a pair of good Sunglasses For your sport there are a few key factors you should be looking for.
• First off you want to purchase sunglasses that have at least 100% UVA and UVB resistance. Don’t underestimate the suns power and always remember that damage caused by UV rays cannot be reversed. UV rays are also known to cause cataracts and directly damage the retina.
• The Glasses need to be lightweight and comfortable. Please don’t underestimate the importance of this especially if you are participating in an ultra long distance event like the ironman. When you are focusing on your breathing, cadence and mental concentration the last thing you want worrying you is a pair of sunglasses.
• It is strongly recommended that you purchase sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses. These lenses are up to 10 times more resistant against impact, which obviously greatly reduces the chances of breakage. The polycarbonate lenses are also much lighter that regular lenses which ads to the overall comfort of the sunglasses.
• Polarized lenses greatly reduce the glare encountered while out on the road. These lenses also have an anti-scratch covering that helps preserve the lenses.
• Try and ensure that your sunglasses have rubber contact points. While training the sweat will cause regular glasses to slide off your face distracting you from the race. Rubber contact points will ensure that the sunglasses remain fixed in one position and you won’t have to worry or be distracted by them.
• Ventilated lenses are quite important especially with mountain biking and trail running as your speed can be quite slow. This reduces ventilation behind the glasses causing fogging.
• Lastly it is quite nice to have interchangeable lenses. This allows you to use a tint appropriate lens for the light levels outside. Visibility is very important for safety and you don’t want to be sporting really dark lenses on an overcast dark day.
Don’t underestimate the importance of specialized eye wear for your specific sport. Aside from looking good they also enhance the overall experience of your sport.
